Botox – The Next Best Thing to a Facelift

Most people associate botox with the “next best thing” to a facelift to get rid of frown wrinkles. Not to mention the cost is much cheaper and the recovery time is minimal. Botox is quick and convenient because the treatment is aptly called the “lunch procedure”.

What many people don't know is that Botox was historically used to treat a variety of medical conditions before it became popular for cosmetic purposes. It is effectively used to treat deep frown lines, uncontrolled blinking, skin diseases, as well as glandular and nervous diseases.

When the FDA finally approved it, the press release said Botox was for temporary use to improve "the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles between the eyebrows." In a randomized placebo-controlled study, researchers found that frown wrinkles in people significantly improved or disappeared within one month of Botox injections.

When Botox is injected into the face, it blocks the acetylcholine receptors and stops the pathway that leads to muscle contraction, thereby controlling the ability to frown. When used properly by a qualified practitioner, the results are very beneficial. It only takes a teaspoon of Botox to make a dramatic difference in removing wrinkles.

Botox treatment is usually done in a doctor's office. The patient is asked to sit up straight and tighten the facial muscles during the Botox injection. Patients are advised not to lie down for the next four or five hours to allow the treated facial muscles a chance to fall into the natural position they would have done during the day.
