Responsibilities of the release train engineer(RTE)

Engineers who release train interact with many levels of their organizations. They must have a deeper understanding of the Agile and SAFe environment to be able to bring value to their organization.

These are the few main responsibilities of an RTE:

People – The release train engineer has one of the most important tasks: to ensure that employees and teams have positive experiences. Education and coaching – The RTE should teach their leaders and scrum masters the Lean and Agile management methods and ideologies.

Program Increments (PI) – A time period through which an Agile release train gives incremental benefit in the form of operating software and systems that are properly tested. This is the Agile equivalent of an iteration. RTEs are responsible for creating and communicating the annual calendars of iterations and PIs to facilitate planning and readiness and summarizing the PI objectives and publishing them to ensure transparency and visibility.

Improvement roadmap – A release train engineer must also create retro improvement roadmaps. This involves analyzing all actions and activities that were performed previously and finding ways to improve them.

Certificates

RTE candidates should have a bachelor's degree or comparable work experience. Although certifications are required almost always, the SAFe release train engineer credential is the only one specifically designed for this job. This certification program ensures that all certificate holders have the necessary knowledge to manage Agile release train operations in organizations of any size.
