Before the invention of carbon-free carbon paper, users wrote documents several times or used carbon paper. The carbon paper is placed between the writing paper and the spear. This method makes the user's fingertips dirty. With carbon-free paper, many handwritten and printed copies of documents can be made easily and cleanly.

The advantage of non-carbon paper is that it is a biodegradable and stain free alternative to carbon paper. NCR first made this product, calling it carbon-free paper, or NCR, which is the opposite of their company's national cash register.

Carbon-free copy paper consists of sheets of paper coated with a dye or microencapsulated ink and possibly reactive clay. The back of the first sheet is covered with microencapsulated paint. The bottom sheet is covered on top with clay, which quickly reacts with the dye and creates a permanent mark. The leaves are immediately covered with clay on top and paint on the bottom.

When someone writes on carbon-free, carbon-free paper, the pressure from the writing container causes the microcapsules to break and spill the dye. The capsules are very small, which makes the impression recovered from the print very accurate.

The paper can be used in dot matrix printers and impingement printers, where the imping head releases the dye to interact with the sound. Carbon-free copy paper is also available in a standalone version that has ink and clay on the same side of the paper.

Sometimes users need sets of ten or more copies. This is easy to do with NCR paper.
